Superficial (First-Degree) Burns: Superficial burns are the mildest form of burns and only affect the outermost layer of the skin, known as the epidermis. They are characterized by redness, minor swelling, and pain. Sunburns are a common example of first-degree burns. These burns usually heal within a few days without leaving significant scarring. Treatment for first-degree burns includes cooling the affected area with cold water, applying soothing ointments, and keeping the burn clean to prevent infection.

Superficial Partial-Thickness (Second-Degree) Burns: Superficial partial-thickness burns extend beyond the epidermis, reaching the upper layers of the dermis. These burns appear as blisters, are extremely painful, and present with a mottled appearance. Although they may heal on their own, they require proper care to minimize complications. Treatment often involves applying sterile dressings, pain management, and wound care to prevent infection and promote healing.

Deep Partial-Thickness (Second-Degree) Burns: Deep partial-thickness burns penetrate deeper into the dermis, causing damage to hair follicles, sweat glands, and nerve endings. These burns result in intense pain, with the affected area appearing waxy or white. Unlike superficial partial-thickness burns, deep partial-thickness burns are less likely to heal on their own and often require specialized medical treatment, such as wound debridement, to remove dead tissue and promote proper healing.

Full-Thickness (Third-Degree) Burns: Full-thickness burns affect all layers of the skin, extending into the subcutaneous tissue. The burned area may appear charred, leathery, or white. These burns destroy nerve endings, resulting in the loss of sensation, and may not be painful initially due to nerve damage. Treatment for full-thickness burns typically involves surgical intervention, such as skin grafting, to replace the damaged tissue and aid in wound closure.

Fourth-Degree Burns: Fourth-degree burns are the most severe and extend beyond the skin, affecting muscles, tendons, and even bones. The burned area may appear blackened and charred. Fourth-degree burns require immediate medical attention and often involve a combination of surgical procedures, wound care, and specialized treatment to restore function and prevent infection.

Classification Based on Extent:

Burns can also be classified based on the percentage of total body surface area (TBSA) affected. The Rule of Nines is commonly used to estimate TBSA in adults, where each major body part represents approximately 9% (or a multiple of 9%) of the total body surface. In children, the Lund and Browder chart is used, providing a more accurate estimation as it considers age-specific body proportions.
